Aerva Lanata – BHOOMI Herbs Series

“Aerva Lanata” commonly known as Mountain Knot Grass is a flowering plant which is generally found in Asian countries especially in India. Though the plant has a lot of medicinal properties it’s quite commonly used in South India during the Tamil festival “Pongal” as the flower of this plant is used for decoration. In Tamil language it’s also called as Ponga-Poo, which is derived from the names Pongal – A Harvest festival of Tamil Nadu and Poo in Tamil means Flower. Other common Tamil names used for this plant are "Kannu Pillai Poo" and "Siru Poolai"

Aerva Lanata is a self-pollinated plant and is commonly found in areas like Tuticorin, Tirunelveli and Kanya Kumari. The plant is also found in regions of Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Punjab and Assam.

Although not very widely used by the food industry, the powder form of this herb finds application in  Soups and Salads to add the herbal value to such products. Further, Aerva Lanata is used as a traditional medicine in treating Sore Throat, Asthma and is used as a cure for Urinary Tract Infections. The extracts of this plant are used in the treatment of Diabetes and many studies have been done to understand the anti-diabetic properties of Aerva Lanata.
