An essential oil is a concentrated, hydrophobic liquid containing volatile aromatic compounds from plants. It is produced by the process of steam distillation. Raw plant material, consisting of the leaves, seeds, flowers, wood, bark, roots, or peel, are processed (de-husked, pulverised, ground or flaked as applicable) and put into a distillation apparatus/kettle and steam is passed through it vaporising the volatile compounds. The mixture of essential oil vapours/water is condensed back to liquid, which is then collected in the receiving vessel. The essential oil layer is separated, dried, filtered, analysed and packed.
Essential oils are widely applied as ingredients by flavour, fragrance, aromatherapy, cosmetics, incense, Pharma, home care and air care industries.
